As some 70,000 people make their way out of Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday evening in South Philly, another group of people (presumably, not nearly as large) are hoping to make that crowd’s exit a little bit more difficult.
According to a report on ESPN.com, a Philadelphia clergy group known as POWER (Philadelphia Organized to Witness Empower & Rebuild) is organizing a protest known as a “die-in” outside of the stadium at the intersection of Broad St. and Pattison Ave. The protest is part of a series of “die-ins” taking place across the country following the grand jury decisions in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases.
The protesters will lie in the middle of the intersection for four minutes and thirty seconds, to represent the four hours and thirty minutes that Brown’s lifeless body laid in the middle of the street in Ferguson after he was shot by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. Participants were instructed by POWER organizers to arrive at 7pm to prepare for the protest.
Similar events have taken place in Ferguson, Chicago, New York, and other parts of Philadelphia.
These events have been relatively peaceful throughout the country, but it’ll be interesting to see how things turn out on Sunday evening, especially depending on the outcome of the game between the Eagles and visiting Seattle Seahawks. Consider this: No matter the outcome, you’re going to have a bunch of drunken idiots stumbling their way to the nearby subway station, coming face to face with protesters. All’s it’s going to take is one stupid asshole to say one stupid thing to turn this into an ugly situation.
